My first entry is going to be about the Motorola Q.

If anyone out there is thinking about buying I have some words of advice for you don't buy it. This has got to be the worst phone on the planet.

I will just give you a brief history of what has happened to me and I won't bore you with the hours I have spent getting help for this phone. When I bought the phone in July of this year I thought it was great. After about a week with the phone I started to notice all of it shortcomings. There are so many that I could right a book but I said I would be brief. The phone would mysteriously lock up when I would receive a call or whenever it felt like it. This would occur about 2-3 times a day. The only cure was to physically remove the battery, put it back in and then turn the phone back on again. That brings me to another problem with the Q. It takes about 35-40 seconds to boot up. During this time you are forced to watch the Verizion Wireless logo on the screen. Enjoy!@@@

Then there is the battery life of the Q, it lasts for about 6 hours without being plugged in. Oh but wait, you can buy the extended battery for about $55 and it will just make the phone bigger and you will get about 3 more hours of battery life. Now on to the fun part. I have had 3 Q's since they first came out. Each one of them either just stopped working on just died on me for no apparent reason. At least after the first one died I bought some backup software that cost be about $30. So every time one of my Q's dies I just plug it and all of my contacts etc come right back. That is one good thing about the Q.

I will also mention the video recorder and camera are nice on the phone along with the Windows media video player. It is also cool to be able to surf the internet whenever you want to. Motorola did come out with an update for the software which did seem to take care of the lockups and reboots. I would caution anyone from buying this and just go for the Treo or the real Blackberry.

More people to enter race for Verne Smith's senate seat

We have learned there are at least four names being floated around as possible contenders for Verne Smith's senate seat. George Allen was the featured speaker. He was great! He also has a lovely wife. Over 350 people were in attendance at the event. (This is about 50-100 more then was at the same type of event in Spartanburg!)  Gottcha Rick!

That is not the story I am going to tell you. My story will just be a footnote to that story but it was a big story to me.

I arrived at the banquet early to help setup and get things ready for the big night. When I got out of my car I heard something fall to the ground. I thought it might have been my camera bag but I look down and did not see anything. So, I went on in to the banquet and had a great time.

The next morning I was getting ready to go to the markets when I started looking around for my wallet. Low and behold I could not find it. Then I remember what happened in the parking garage and surmised it must have fallen on the ground in the parking garage.

In a panic I look online at some of my credit cards and I see that nothing has been charged to any of them, what a relief no new charges. I call the Hyatt and they said they had my wallet and they turned it over to the police. I call the Greenville City Police an officer Chandler tells me he has my wallet and it looks as if it has not been rifled through nor had any money been taken out of it. He offers me his cell phone number and tells me to call before I come down and he will meet me there and give me back my wallet.

Long story short, I got my wallet back and it had all of my credit cards in it and all of the money that was in it was still there. I don’t know who found my wallet but, someone did and they turned it in. I want to publicly thank them, The Hyatt and the City of Greenville Police Department. My hats are off to all of you!!!

Disappointing Fourth of July Celebration at Furman

I love the fourth of July and I have celebrated the fourth of July at Furman for about five or six years now. I have never been disappointed with it until this year.

They apparently spent all of their money on the new sound system and very little money on the fireworks. The sound system they had installed at the top of the bell tower produced a clear sound that you could from all around the lake. This will be a nice addition to their concert by the lake series.

With that said, I have one word to say about the fireworks, disappointing. There was a heavy rain before the fireworks began and I don’t know if that had something to do with or not. The fireworks show went on for only about 7 minutes and then it was over. Or so everyone thought, it took about five minutes of interlude and seemed to start over again but this time it only lasted for about three minutes.

One staple of the show is the 1812 overture with the cannons firing. Needless to say the cannon’s did not fire this year. I for one wanted my money back.

Blogging from SCGOP Howard Dean scream contest

We now have some audio from the event. Click here to listen to it.

Right now there are about six people here to scream. There are a gaggle of media here and a Howard Dean doll even made an apperance. The contest will start in just a few minutes.

We have been informed by the State Democratic party they are calling this event "childish".

They are starting. The event is also being broadcast live on the Rocky D show in Charleston.

The three lady judges for the contest was Sunny Phillips, Jean Moore and Kendall Robinson they judged the contestant based on lack of poise, loudness and originallity. The highest possible score is 30.

The first contestant Tim Cameron, Marietta GA, scored 26.

Richard Hahn scored 30 points because of originality.

The next contestant, Lanford Holloway, was a little scarry so he scored 28

Alex Stroman was very loud and 22

Franklin Buchanan was a little loud. He did an impressive scream but only scored 28.

Blake Montgomery, a party intern, got only a 19.

Bob Chapman turned into a deep voice and got a 27.

Mike Green who also got involved scored a 28. With the final line being what are you going to do when the dean master comes for you. Giving his best Macho man look.

The winner of the Howard Dean scream contest was Lanford Holloway who scored a perfect 30. We will have a brief interview with him in a minute.

Richard is from a Columbia high school and came out to show his support for Howard Dean. He won contest becuase of his originality and volume scream. At times he seem like a mad man and even claimed he was going to Puerto Rico, Canada and Iran.

This was a good time to poke fun at politics and not to take themselves too seriously.

WE INTERRUPT THIS POST TO BRING YOU LATE BREAKING NEWS. THE "WEATHER" FORCED THE CANCEL OF HIS TRIP.

The low down on House District 24 primary

This state House race to replace David Wilkins is certainly getting plenty of attention from all across the political spectrum and everyone seems to want to know more about what is going on. Since I live in Greenville and consider myself a political gadfly, I feel that I must comment on it.

Let me start by saying that I have not received any money from any of the candidates nor am I employed by any of the ones who have announced they are in this race. However, I do have my opinions about some people that I like in the race as well as some people I do not like.

Let’s begin with the people who are running and I'll give you my take on them.

The first one out of the gate is Bruce Bannister, a conservative Greenville attorney (insert your favorite lawyer joke here). He is a young, nice guy, clean-cut and presentable. Bruce is the grandson of former U.S. Senator Tom Wofford, who happened to be one of the first Republicans elected from the Upstate. The main question I have about him is this: Can he win? While I believe he might have a future in politics and he might even be a dark horse in this race, I don’t believe he will win. He'll probably wind up coming in third or fourth, but everyone will like him which will enable him to run for some other office in the future.

The second fellow is Ben Lister, who is also an attorney from Greenville. Once again, this man is a nice guy, clean-cut and presentable. He has been a longtime activist in the Republican Party and recently volunteered for then-Congressman Jim DeMint's congressional races. But again the question arises: Can he win? This guy is really sharp and I honestly believe he will have a future in politics as well, but not in this race. He will likely have more time to spend campaigning which could pay off with a surprise victory. But again my gut tells me it's not gonna happen. I think he will probably come in a close third.

The third person in the race is Tom Ervin, a former Circuit Court judge and former Democratic House member. Yes, you read that right he was a former Democrat in the house. After doing a quick search on the FEC website for Tom Ervin, here is what we discovered about his past giving to other candidates for office. He gave Inez Tenenbaum $2,000; $10,000 to the SC Democratic Party in 2005; $2000 to George W. Bush; $1,000 to Alex Sanders; and $4,000 to Sen. Lindsey Graham. The question I have about Ervin is this: Why is he running as a Republican? He served in the House as a Democrat and he gave $10,000 to the state Democratic Party THIS year. Have the Democrats abandoned him or is he still with them and just trying to blend into the Republican landscape? When people find out more about Ervin, he will end up next to last in this primary race.

The next Republican candidate in the race is William Herlong, a trustee on the Greenville County School Board. He has long been vilified by the local Republicans as really being a Democrat. Of course, it did not help him when he consider running for U.S. Congress when he was quoted in The Greenville News in 1998 or 2000 as saying “I don’t know which party I am going to run under. I could really run under either.” Herlong will have to do a lot of convincing to the Republicans that he really is a Republican and not just a RINO. His conservative beliefs on so many of the issues will do it for some because he supports school choice and claims he is pro-life. In fact, I have talked with him about his beliefs on many issues and feel that he is moving towards conservative thinking on many of the important issues. He will be THE candidate to watch in the race because he has been elected twice by his district and is a good speaker. I believe he will easily make it into the Republican run-off race and he could defeat the Democrat in the general election.

Another candidate in the race is Warren Mowry. That name is very well-known in Republican circles because he has been active in the Greenville Republican Party for many years serving as chairman. Mowry is a professor at Greenville Tech who previously ran for Solicitor about eight years ago, but was later defeated by Joe Watson. He is a strong conservative and has good name ID in Greenville County. He will easily make the runoff, but there is a question in my mind whether can he win the general election against Democrat Michelle Shain? It will depend on what he does between now and the general election. Mowry will certainly benefit from the fact that District 24 was redrawn to make sure Republicans retain it. Matter of fact, with the new redistricting it is more conservative now then it was in 2000. Mowry can certainly win the Republican nomination, but it will take a conscious effort on his part to attack Erwin early and then rally the other candidates behind him for the runoff with Herlong. If he does that, then he will win the Republican primary and then win the General.

That's my thoughts on the race, but now I want to hear yours. If you disagree, then tell me where I am wrong.

Writers wanted

Congratulations to Speaker Bobby Harrell and also to Ambassador David Wilkins for all your hard work this legislative session.

Of course, SC Hotline and also The Right Times would like to see politics continue the whole year. We realize all good things must come to an end and there is a place and time for everything. That is why at this time we would like to issue an open policy letter to any elected official to write for SC Hotline or The Right Times.

Do you have an issue that you would like to grow public support for? Then tell the public why by writing about it in SC Hotline. We can even help you edit your letter and publish it in other media outlets.

We are the number one news source for politico’s to check out everyday. We will feature your letter on our main site. Many people will see it and even more will be talking about it at the water cooler. Was he sent by the President or Sen. Frist to negotiate a secret deal? Or is he a renegade Republican? Time will only tell and it will judge Senator Graham’s action. I tend to agree that Graham was not sent by Frist. If he was, then Frist is an incredibly weak leader who should resign from the Senate.

My column this week is all about who is up and who is down. I will do a column like this from month to month. The politicians who are up this week are Senator DeMint. He took the presidents side to end the filibuster and was disappointed by the actions of fourteen Senators. His stock has went up about 5 points this week in my opinion.

Another person who stock has raised is Thomas Ravenel. You might say, I worked for him and therefore I am loyal to him. That is the case here but, I believe it was courageous for Ravenel to take a stand and to keep Sen. Graham’s toes to the fire. I also like the line where Thomas called Senator Graham “The Third Senator from New York.” Ravenel’s stock goes up three points!

Let’s not forget the state GOP chairman, Katon Dawson, and his comments about how many phone calls the state GOP was getting against Sen. Graham and how he basically told John McCain you better stay out of South Carolina. You have no chance of winning here. (The following comments were me reading between the lines in several news articles etc.) My hat goes off to Senator (err… I mean) Chairman Dawson. He is one who will tell it like it is and not just drink the kool-aid. His stock went up two points.

One of the strangest lines for a press release took place last week when Chairman Erwin responded to a press conference from the Governor. “By examining his record so far it's pretty clear that Mark Sanford couldn't sell pictures of Paris Hilton to a college frat house." Is this really a comment that a chairman and CEO of Erwin-Penland would say? Or is this a comment that an intern in college wrote for him? Chairman Erwin that was dumb comment! You could have come up with a better line. Your stock goes down three points for that comment alone.

The tide is turning and the old Turks are out and the new Turks are rising to power. At the same time, I was dissapointed that our own, Sen. Graham, was trying to play both sides of the fence on the issue. Sometimes he said he was going to vote for the nuclear option and other times he said he wasn't. (Check the transcript at CNN tonight.) I was also proud of our new Sen. Jim DeMint who stood his ground and did not back down an inch!

There was a comprise made that neither side is thrilled with but one that we will both have to live with. The deal has been made and there is "Peace in our Time."

The deal was made in Sen. McCain's office. That should do it for any presidential hopes that Sen. McCain ever had. He will never be able to win a Republican primary. Also Sen. Frist is a looser in the deal. He is a leader in the Senate and could not put this deal together? That says something for his leadership skills.

I want to know what you think about "The Deal?" Was it a good deal for Republicans? With the news today that Sen. Graham (a.k.a. McCain Jr.) is trying to reach a compromise on the “Constitutional” option/Nuclear option has made me hopping mad.

Senator Graham, Republicans are in the majority and now is the time to lead or get out of the way! Senator Graham we want an up or down vote on all of President Bush’s judicial nominees and we want to end the filibuster now!

The State Newspaper reported the following.

U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., spent Thursday trying to forge a compromise on the filibuster controversy rocking the Senate.

Graham holed up with a bipartisan group of about a dozen senators who want to avoid what is known as the “nuclear option” — the end of the filibuster for judicial nominees.

The compromise Senator Graham is trying to reach is to give in to the Democrats on two or three of the judges that would in turn get us votes on the rest of the judges.

What in the world is he thinking? There can be no compromise reached on voting for judges. They all deserve an up or down vote, period!. There can be no compromise with the Democrats. The American people elected Republicans to stop this judicial filibuster. Would the Democrats reach a compromise with us? NO! Neither should we.

This is a power grab by Lindsey plain and simple. The leadership of both parties could not reach an agreement and now we have a handful of Senators, twelve to be exact, who want to cave in and give the Democrats the ability to continue their pattern of “divide and destruct” our judicial nominees.

This is one time that Republicans need to stand strong and not cave in. Everyone needs to call Senator Graham’s office and let him know what you think of this idea. Here are his phone numbers. Call all of them and make sure he know what you are thinking.

Washington Office
290 Russell Senate Office Building
Washington, DC 20510
(202) 224-5972 phone

Upstate Regional Office
101 East Washington Street, Suite 220
Greenville, South Carolina 29601
(864) 250-1417

Midlands Regional Office
508 Hampton Street, Suite 202
Columbia, South Carolina 29201
(803) 933-0112 phone

Pee Dee Regional Office
McMillan Federal Building
401 West Evans Street, Suite 226B
Florence, South Carolina 29501
(843) 669-1505 phone

Lowcountry Regional Office
530 Johnnie Dodds Boulevard, Suite 202
Mt. Mark Sanford has achieved lately? I would honestly like to know the answer to that question. We hear about what a great governor he has been for the state of South Carolina, but what has he really done?

I know what you're thinking, but before you shut down your brain on me, don't think this is a veiled attempt at being an anti-Mark Sanford article. It is not. You can either dismiss me as a simple-minded man who obviously doesn't know what's really going on in state politics or you can take my question into serious consideration and help the Governor shape his message heading into the 2006 gubernatorial election.

It could be argued that Gov. Sanford has been a champion for challenging the citizens of South Carolina to get healthier (and don't we all need that!), but what part of his 2002 campaign agenda has been enacted into law during this legislative session?

From what I can see, only a fraction of his much-heralded state income tax relief platform has been passed into law. Furthermore, with the departure of House Speaker David Wilkins to become the new U.S. ambassador to Canada, Gov. Sanford has lost his strongest advocate in the state House.

Is it just me or has Gov. Sanford gotten off of his message and seems to lack any clear focus?

On the day after the PPIC bill he supported was killed in the state legislature, he wrote an op-ed piece about Santee Cooper. Then, two days later we read another op-ed from First Lady Jenny Sanford challenging South Carolinians to be healthier. Other than that, it has been a quiet week for the governor with nothing significant announced in any press statements.

Just what is the core message coming out of Columbia? Call me a cynic, but I'm not seeing any clear vision of where Gov. Sanford wants to take South Carolina.

By the way, where was Gov. Sanford during the school choice debate anyways? Granted, he did do two television commercials for Citizens For A Responsible Government, but he did not use the bully pulpit of the governor's office as effectively as he could have to shape public opinion regarding PPIC.

Since we are already on the subject, where were conservative state Republican lawmakers during the school choice debate as well? I don't remember reading any press statements in support of PPIC from them either.

I am deeply concerned that Gov. Sanford is not using the power of the media as well as he should to spread his positive message. He needs to remain focused on presenting his message in a clear and concise manner so the people of South Carolina will know why he supports what he does. Right now, his message is like a tree that falls in the forest. It makes a sound, but nobody can hear it.

Republican elected officials need to latch on to some of these ideas being promoted by Gov. Sanford so the conservative reform agenda that got them elected in the past few political campaigns can finally come to pass.

I think this latest legislative session will go down in the history books as one of the worst ever for the state of South Carolina. It seems to me that nothing important got accomplished because everyone was lacking focus.

Okay, enough of what I think? What say you? Agree? Disagree? (Okay, I just worked with her for two weeks with Victory 2004.)

I think her and Ron has done a great job and they might just win the race. Last night they started off in last place and ended in 2nd place. They did everything just about right. Except Kelly should have let Ron drive the bus but, I digress. This process is short-circuited if government offers bailouts in the forms of guaranteed loans, subsidies or restrictions such as tariffs and import quotas on competitive products from abroad. Government "help" enables failing companies to continue squandering resources. In this context it is important to remember that a business going bankrupt doesn't meant that its productive resources will vanish into thin air. It means someone else will own them.

Think about that. It is 100% true. Capitalism will force people to use their resources in the best possible way. It might take some time, but after a while they will go out of business if they don't. We also learn that government is not the solution, but the problem most of the time.

Funny Drunk Andre Suporter!

I have been a little too serious since I started the blog. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.), a leading advocate of the “nuclear option” to end the Democrats’ filibuster of judicial nominees, is privately arguing for a delay in the face of adverse internal party polls.

Details of the polling numbers remain under wraps, but Santorum and other Senate sources concede that, while a majority of Americans oppose the filibuster, the figures show that most also accept the Democratic message that Republicans are trying to destroy the tradition of debate in the Senate.

The Republicans are keeping the “nuclear” poll numbers secret, whereas they have often in the past been keen to release internal survey results that favor the party. David Winston, head of the Winston Group, which conducts Senate GOP polls, did return phone calls seeking comment.

Confirming public disquiet over the “nuclear” or “constitutional” option, Santorum said, “Our polling shows that.” But, he added, public thinking had been muddied by what he called false Democratic arguments that checks and balances were being eroded.

Excuse me, Senator gutless, who controls the US Senate? Does the GOP or does public opinion. If we are going to be governed my polls then why do we need Congressman or Senators. We could just have a super computer poll on an issue and then make laws from the polling. Could you imagine the money we could save on campaigns alone!

Sometimes political leaders must do things that are unpopular. Do you think George Washington took a public opinion poll at Valley Forge? We need Senators who will stand up and do what is right no matter what the polls say.

To all the GOP Senators and staffers out there I have one message for you today. The GOP is in charge of the Senate and the House act like it!

Welcome to The Right Times

Welcome to "The Right Times."
